Sintra Lamp
Fall 2023 | Object Centred Design
In this project, I was tasked with designing a lamp using Sintra board as the primary material. Along with this constraint, I was provided a standard IKEA E26 lightbulb, cord set, and socket housing to design around. These electrical components formed the core functional elements of the lamp, and my challenge was to build a structure that showcased both aesthetic vision and practical integration.
Drawing inspiration from the Memphis design movement, I created a lamp that embraces geometric abstraction and playful form. Memphis design is known for its rebellious take on traditional design—favoring expressive shapes and unconventional compositions. I echoed that spirit in my lamp's structure, treating the Sintra not just as a building material, but as a graphic element within the form itself.
To demonstrate repeatability and precision, I constructed two identical lamps, showing that the design could be reproduced consistently—an essential consideration for production scalability.
This project was an exercise in working within constraints: material limitations, pre-defined electrical components, and visual inspiration. The result is a functional lamp that doubles as a statement piece, reflecting how constraint-driven design can still yield expressive, market-ready outcomes.
