Primary Shelf
For my furniture class at the University of Alberta, I designed and built a shelf inspired by the Rietveld Schröder House and the De Stijl movement. I was drawn to De Stijl’s philosophy of reducing visual complexity into pure geometric forms and primary colors, and I translated this into a modular shelving system that allows the user to actively engage with the composition. The back panel is MDF with routed tracks, while the shelves are made from 18-gauge steel, fiber laser cut and bent to slide in and out. The use of steel not only allows the shelves to be magnetic but also reinforces the movement’s emphasis on simplicity, functionality, and harmony between form and space. By combining architectural inspiration, geometric rigor, and interactive functionality, this piece embodies the principles of De Stijl while inviting the user to participate in the composition.
